Why Do You Play Sports

salt N lightPeople play sports for many different reasons. Some people play for exercise, some play for fun, some play for glory, some play for money, some play to fit in with others. I have played sports my whole life, and I have had some great successes and some great failures. At some points in my life I have played for the different reasons listed above. As God has molded me and shaped me over the years of my life He has shown me something that is very important.

1 Corinthians 10:31 So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.

That is what God has shown me in my times in sports it is for His glory not my own. If you strive to glorify God in your athletic endeavors people will see that and witnessing opportunities will follow. If you are trying to bring attention to yourself your intentions are in the wrong place. If you are trying to bring glory to God that is when God is happy with your athletic ability. When God is the focus of all that you do, your actions on and off the field will follow.
For those of you who have had a lot of success in athletics or in anything really just remember to remain humble.

1 Samuel 2:3 Do not keep talking so proudly or let your mouth speak such arrogance, for the Lord is a God who knows and by him deeds are weighed.

Matthew 23:5 For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.

Nothing that you do is for your glory and nothing you do for God is done on your own; the Holy Spirit will lead you along the way. In my experiences people need to see to believe and if they see a proud and boastful person it will be a lot harder for them to accept what you are trying to share with them. The goal in all of this is to share your faith with them by your actions and by your words. That has been my experience with sharing my faith, you need to show them and tell them. In sports there will be many chances you will have to show your faith and what drives you on the field. We will talk more about that another time.
